Canadian cedar (thuya occidentalis) represents the perfect balance of feminine and male polarities. It is also called «The Tree of Peace», because of Deganawidah, a very important messianic figure in North America. Deganawidah brought the great Law of Peace to the Iroquoian people and formed what is now known as the League of Six Nations, one of the first forms of United Nations to exist on earth. Everywhere he went, Deganawidah planted a cedar as a symbol of Unity and Peace for the people.

Cedar brings balance and healing. It is one of the most important medicines of the Native American people. The leaves of thuya, as it is called in Europe, are used in many therapies, in herbal teas, in ritual medicine baths, in the sweat lodge and as an incense or smudge. This tree is among the most important for the First Nations of the Northeast. Many healing ceremonies use cedar. The oil which we use is prepared in a special way. Its influence favors balance, peace and serenity. It cleanses the air and eliminates polluants and acaroids. It is vermifuge, destroying physical and psychic parasites. Cedar enhances pysical health and favors longevity. Its blessings are uncountable and we are very grateful for all its gifts.

Here is a question from one of our readers, Alain, about meditation:

Hello Blue Eagle, I want to ask you a few questions about meditation : do you consider meditation to be a form of spirituality? I have tried the technique of the white meditation recently, do you know it? It consists in visualising a white wall during ten minutes or so, a stage which is supposed to help us emerge into contemplative meditation. Do you think this technique can help us experiment a state of deep meditation?

BE: Many forms of spirituality will teach meditation as a tool on the path to enlightenment. Meditation is not a spirituality, it’s a technique to assist one on the beauty way. One saying in Zen Buddhism comes to mind, although I don’t remember who originally said it but it goes this way: ‘Enlightenment is an accident and meditation is a tool to help us become accident prone’.

There are a great many meditation techniques. Some use visualization, energy exercises, concentration on a sound, an image or a spiritual being. But all have the same goal: helping us to go beyond ordinary mind to emerge into the here and now, thus enlightenment. In truth, being with the Divine source and light which is within us, is enlightenment. In the beginning, it comes and goes as we weave tight our robe of light but with time it grows and we dwell more and more in the one light until we become one with it. Then there are no more questions but many answers.

B: Blue Eagle, in previous articles, you already explained that natural cataclysms are a manifestation of people’s karma. Also, in your book Le Sentier de la Beauté, you write about the ability one has to influence the natural elements into propitious weather, if we are connected to nature and the spirits inhabiting her. Then you explain that in Europe, as nobody has been communicating, nor making offerings, for centuries, in most areas, those spirits are asleep, and it would take some time performing ceremonies to get in touch with them again.

Do you think the recent storm that raged in Europe can be understood as well as a manifestation of people’s karma in the regions that were affected, or that it is more the expression of a general situation and of the perturbations of the natural ecosystem generated by our modern time ?

BE: Both explanations are valid, though it might seem difficult to accept.

B: Do you believe that such phenomena could be avoided in the future if people would get back to rituals and ceremonies meant to honour the spirits of nature and communicate with them -even if some people still continue spoiling the earth with their consuming habits?

BE: Locally yes, we can have a certain influence on local weather patterns if we are living on family domains and meeting with like-minded people to honour nature and do ceremonies of thanksgiving and appreciation. But these local weather patterns are also influenced by global weather patterns that are definitely out of balance and will continue to be this way all over the earth until humanity understands its responsibilities towards creation.

Beaver.jpg A lot of teachings come from the beaver, which is a very family-oriented creature, an ecologist and a builder. Beavers will build very intricate houses, with several entry points and exit points, very comfortable, and there will often be several generations living together, as much as three or four generations. They modify the ecology of the place where they live by building dams along the water flows where they build their houses, which are actually built into these dams. The small lake that forms behind these dams creates a whole new ecosystem.

For Native people, they are considered very important. They were a main food staple for the Northern Indians, because they were easy to find and catch in the winter; but Native people always left a healthy couple so that there was enough for future generations, and so that their community would continue on; it is a fairly big animal, much bigger than a cat, so there was a lot of meat there and also a lot of fat, especially in the tail, which is nearly exclusively fat, and people way up North, where it is very cold, had  a lot of animal fat in their diet.

The Beaver Clan, amongst the Native people, was thus a clan whose responsibility was to care for the ecology. If the people noticed any kind of problem with a practice or activity that might harm the ecology, they would bring this to a member of the Beaver Clan, who would bring this to the community council.  It was the Beavers  Clans' responsibility to check it out, and if there really was a problem, to bring it to the council. They were also the ones responsible for hosting annual and cyclical ceremonies, because they were good organizers, and they would work well together to make these things happen.

Those people are very strong and persistent, like the beavers are. They could also be very good builders; if people had something to build, they would call upon the Beaver Clan to lend a hand, because they would have great abilities to do this.

So, when a person has the beaver as a totem, he usually is very family-oriented, he is a good builder, and has the potential to transform the ecology of the place where he lives.
