B : Some teachers from the Native American tradition say that it does not comprehend any notion of
reincarnation. However, in one of your recent articles, dated from 30 November, you describe how the soul travels from one life to another. Is there a unity, in this tradition? It seems that many
fundamental principles belong to all tribes, but that there are also many variations. But the question of reincarnation sounds essential to me, so what do you think of all these differences?
BE: It is true that many differences exist, mainly between North America and South America. In my article “The eternal travelling of the soul in the Native American tradition”, I spoke
about the experience I shared with the Cherokee nation, which is quite isolated, with believes really different from those of other nations. But I heard many a Native American teacher speak about
the concept of reincarnation. One should not try to define the native American tradition by isolating it in the past. The spiritual life of a people is always evolving, and many Natives have
adopted the Buddhist philosophy, for instance.
